Swimming To Lose Weight
How Swimming Can Help You Lose Weight Fast
I think that swimming to lose weight is an often over-looked form of exercise. Many people think that it is not rigorous enough to
burn the calories needed to, in-turn, burn fat. But this is not the case.
Swimming is one of the best forms of exercise. It works on just about all the muscles in your body. So
by swimming you are really doing an overall body workout whereas in the gym you would have to use several weights to create the
same effect on your muscles.
True Case Story
I was at the local swimming pool a couple of weeks ago after deciding to try swimming as part of my exercise regime. I am not a fast or strong swimmer but I swim at my own pace and can do
about 30-40 lengths of the full length of the pool.
Anyway, I was in the changing rooms after my swim and I got talking to a women. She said that she loves swimming and does one hour of
swimming 3 times a week. She said she started out managing 40 lengths at a push when she first started but she is up to about 70 lengths
now within her one hour of swimming - not bad at all.
Last year she said she done exactly that and went from a size 20 to a size 12 (UK) purely by swimming 3 times a week and no dieting.
She had put some of her weight back on and that was why she was there swimming again. She told me she only started swimming again eight
weeks ago and in that eight weeks she had lost 1 stone. And this is purely by swimming, no dieting.
So I think that this proves that swimming to lose weight is a very good form of activity that you should include in your weight loss plan - if
you enjoy swimming that is.
The Benefits of Swimming
- Can be one by anyone of any age
- Can be done in your own time
- Is very therapeutic
- Easy on joints
- Works all muscles in body
- Start off at your own pace
How Often To Swim
I think the case study above says it all really, but to reiterate:
- Swim 2-4 times a week.
- Try to swim for at least half an hour. Then try to swim up to one hour each session.
- Start off at your own pace and work towards either swimming for a longer period or swimming more lengths.
Personally I wouldn't totally rely on swimming to lose weight without following a diet or at least
cutting back on fatty foods. It would be silly to do an hour of swimming then go for a pizza or fish and chips. All your hard work
would be poured down the drain.
