But we need to know how to breathe properly to boost our metabolism.

How Breathing Burns Calories

By inhaling extra oxygen helps your body transform the food you have just eaten into extra energy.   However, you do have to breathe properly for this to be effective.  You have to inhale deeply to use up as much of your lung capacity as possible.  Below I will show you breathing exercises to lose weight effectively.

Another very interesting fact about breathing is that 70% of your body's waste is released merely through breathing.  This only happens when you breathe properly (remember lung capacity) and when you do this the waste toxins are released into the air.  However, if you shallow breathe, then these toxins are kept in your body which in turn puts pressure on other parts of your internal body to help release this unwanted waste.  The latter hinders weight loss. 

How Breathing Reduces Stress

You can also use the same breathing techniques to lose weight and to reduce stress.  Stress and being overweight tend to go hand-in-hand with many of us.  Stress is an emotion and many of us overeat to combat these stressful feelings.  And so the vicious circle continues. 

But if you learn some useful breathing exercises then you can help to reduce your stress levels and help with your weight loss as the same time.  Breathing in the correct manner relaxes both the mind and the body.  So when you find that when you are stressed, don't go straight to the biscuit tin, stop yourself and do the following instead:- 

  • Go to a room where it is quiet and you will not be disturbed
  • Either lie down or sit in a comfortable easy chair
  • Try to clear your mind of your stressful situation
  • Put your hands on your stomach and breathe in deeply through your nose on a count to four.  When you breathe deeply, your lung capacity fills up and you will feel your stomach rise
  • Hold this position for a second or two 
  • Then slowly exhale through your mouth, again on a count of four.  You will now feel your stomach lowering again
  • Repeat this up to ten times.

When you have done this, compose yourself and go and do something constructive even if it is getting the duster out or anything to take your mind of the stressful situation and comfort eating.

Breathing Exercise

The basic breathing techniques to lose weight are based around on how to breathe properly.  I know you might be thinking that I am stupid to tell you how to breathe, but most of us - including me - have actually forgotton how to breathe properly.  Put it this way, if you have children or if you are in contact with children watch how they breathe.  You will notice that their stomachs go in and out, this is because they are breathing properly as they are using up all of their lung capacity.

Now, it is our turn to re-train ourselves to breathe like we did when we were little.  I have touched on this technique above and it is slowly inhaling through your nose until you cannot inhale any more and your stomach rises.  Then slowly exhale through your mouth and your stomach goes back to normal.  This means that you are using up all of your lung capacity.  You are delving deep into your body to catch all those toxins with oxygen.  When you exhale slowly, you are releasing all those toxins into the air.

For maximum effect you must do this with fresh air, outside fresh air.  If you go for a walk, then do these deep breathing exercises to lose weight by burning calories while walking and exhaling those unwanted toxins!
